Volunteers 16 Years or Older

The City of Stockton Animal Shelter welcomes volunteers as young as 16 years of age, with parent/guardian's written approval.  If you have a passion for animals and want to experience working in an animal shelter setting, our volunteer program may be a good fit for you.

Help Make A Difference

The Stockton Animal Shelter is the largest open-admission animal shelter in the city of Stockton and San Joaquin County. The animals in our care depend on our staff to improve their lives while in our care. Animals in our care also depend on volunteers who generously dedicate thousands of volunteer hours each year to improve their lives.

There are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available at the Stockton Animal Shelter. Below are just a few:

  • Foster kittens & puppies.
  • Laundry.
  • Washing dishes.
  • Cleaning dog crates.
  • Interacting with dogs and cats in their kennels to provide enrichment.
  • Clean and care for animals while in the shelter
  • Off-site adoption events.
  • Miscellaneous other duties around shelter.
  • And much more!

Doggie Day Out

Volunteer

Embark on a heartwarming adventure with our "Doggie Day Out" volunteer program, where you can brighten a sheltered dog's day by taking them on an fun-filled outing. This unique opportunity allows you to provide our shelter dogs with a break from shelter life, offering them a nice walk, a car ride, or simply some quality time with a caring human. Joining is simple—sign up, attend a brief orientation, and choose a dog to accompany you on a day filled with fun and companionship. Whether you're a seasoned pet owner or a first-time volunteer, Doggie Day Out is your ticket to making a meaningful impact on these deserving dogs' lives. Foster Program

Make a difference in the lives of shelter animals by becoming a short-term or long-term foster volunteer at our animal services center. At a time when the Stockton Animal Shelter is consistently at maximum capacity, we invite compassionate individuals to open their hearts and homes to temporarily care for dogs and cats in need. As a foster volunteer, you provide a vital lifeline to these animals, offering them a safe and loving environment while helping alleviate overcrowding at the shelter. It's a rewarding opportunity to make a direct impact on the well-being of these furry friends, offering them a chance to thrive and find their forever homes. Join us in creating brighter futures for shelter animals—one foster home at a time.  For more information on how to register as a foster, email us at sasvolunteers@stocktonca.gov .
