Minimum Requirements to Apply for Entry Level Positions
- Graduation from a United States high school or possession of a GED certificate received from a recognized accrediting association.
- Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license at the time of application.
- Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by the time of appointment.
- Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent alien who has applied for citizenship prior to applying.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation, which shall include a polygraph and psychological examination, and a fingerprint clearance.
The Stockton Police Department requires a Police Officer candidate to be a United States citizen or a permanent alien who has applied for citizenship prior to applying for the position.
California Government Code Sections 1031 and 1031.5 state that a peace officer shall be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.
Any permanent resident alien who is employed as a peace officer shall diligently cooperate with the Immigration and Naturalization Service in the processing of his or her application for citizenship and shall be disqualified from holding that position if, three years after the filing of an application for employment, the person has not obtained citizenship due to failure to cooperate in the process of the application for citizenship.
Any permanent resident alien who is employed as a peace officer shall be disqualified from holding that position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.

- No felony convictions.
- Must be able to pass a physical examination, which includes a drug screen, administered by the City physician. Vision requirements are 20/100 uncorrected; 20/30 corrected. Color blindness will be cause for rejection. Hearing must be within normal range -- 5/5.
