POLICE OFFICER ACADEMY
Candidates who are hired as Police Officer Trainees will attend a California P.O.S.T. approved Basic Training Academy. The assigned Academy is chosen by staff of the Stockton Police Department's Personnel and Training Section.
While in the Academy, you will be paid a salary of $4,089.68 per month, plus employee benefits: health, dental, and vision benefits provided by the City of Stockton. The Stockton Police Department will pay for the books, uniforms, and meals per diem for the Academy.
Training
The Academy is an intensive training course that is approximately six months in length. The hours and days vary depending on the Academy. The Basic Training Academy prepares each student by providing hands-on experience, including weapons
training, role-play scenarios, patrol procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and arrest and control techniques. The student must pass written, exercise, scenario, and physical ability tests, to demonstrate readiness for entry into the Department's standardized Field Training Program.
Physical Training
Being a Police Officer in Stockton has many challenges. One challenge is physical fitness. Being physically fit will assist with your performance in the academy. To prepare yourself, you should be in some type of physical fitness program that includes running, push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups. At the time of hire, you should be able to run 3 miles at a 9 minute-per-mile pace, do 35 continuous sit-ups, and 28 continuous push-ups.
Sample physical requirements:
- 1.5 mile run. The applicant is required to run 1.5 miles as fast as possible. This measures cardiorespiratory endurance.
- Sit-ups. The applicant performs as many bent knee sit-ups as possible. This measures dynamic muscular endurance.
- Sit and reach test. The applicant performs a test that measures a range of motion of the lower back and abdominal girth.
- Agility run. The applicant runs through a 60-yard obstacle course as fast as possible. The course requires agility and the ability to change direction quickly. This measures neuromuscular coordination.
- 500-yard run. The applicant runs 400 yards as fast as possible. This simulates work tasks.
- Fence climb. The applicant runs 5 yards and climbs a wooden and/or chain link fence, and continues running 20 yards in the least amount of time. This simulates work tasks.
- Push-ups. The applicant performs as many push-ups as possible with no time limit. This measures upper body strength and endurance.
- Body drag test. The applicant partially lifts and drags a 165 pound dummy 32 feet. This simulates a work task.
Academic Requirements
During the academy you are responsible for the 42 learning domains that are mandated by P.O.S.T. You are required to pass all 42 learning domain exams. Failure to pass will result in remediation. Failure of remediation will result in termination from the Academy and employment with Stockton Police Department.
Along with the learning domains, you will also be tested on report writing, and English, including grammar and language.
