The Stockton Police Department responds to and investigates vehicle collisions involving injury or death, hit and run property damage, or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, occurring on public or private property within the city limits.
Citizens involved in a vehicle collision may exchange personal information with the other involved party without the assistance of the Police Department if the following conditions exist:
- Minimal vehicle damage
- No injuries
- All parties have valid driver's license and proof of insurance

According to the current California Vehicle Code, 2006 Edition, Section 20002 (a) states: "The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting only in damage to any property, including vehicles, shall immediately stop the vehicle at the nearest location that will not impede traffic or otherwise jeopardize the safety of other motorists. Moving the vehicle in accordance with this subdivision does not affect the question of fault." link to California Vehicle Code Section 20002.
Citizens wishing to file a "delayed" vehicle collision report may do so by completing a Counter Report at either the Stockton Police Department Main Facility (22 East Market Street) or North Facility (7209 Tam O'Shanter Drive), Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
