The City of Stockton Unveils Improvement Plans for Victory Park Ponds

(Stockton, CA) - Plans for the improvement of the ponds in historic Victory Park will be unveiled at a public meeting hosted by the City of Stockton’s Stormwater Program, Thursday, January 15, 2009, 6:00 p.m., at the Haggin Museum, 1201 N. Pershing Avenue, Stockton.

Area residents have expressed concerns about the condition of the once-beautiful, now murky ponds in Victory Park outside of the Haggin Museum in Central Stockton, and the City of Stockton is now finalizing plans to restore the ponds to their former tranquil, pristine state of prominence in the community. Plans, as prepared by Callander Associates of Rancho Cordova, will be on display for view and discussion.

The Municipal Utilities Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the stormwater collection system, which consists of drainage lines, catch basins, pumping stations and these ponds. Stormwater is the water that flows into our streets and drains from rainstorms and other outdoor water sources out directly to local waterways. The ponds have a stormwater treatment function as well as aesthetically enhancing the Park.

Victory Park’s ponds have been a feature of the Park since it was established in 1914. They have continuously collected stormwater from the Park and surrounding residential neighborhood with no significant repairs or improvements throughout the years.

Project plans include removal of the pond sediment and muck, restoration of the stormwater treatment function, installation of an aeration system to improve water circulation, re-shoring of the water’s edge, and enhancement of the landscaping in and around the ponds. Repair and construction will begin in late Spring 2009.

For information about the project or the upcoming meeting, please contact the City’s Stormwater Program at (209) 937-8155.
