Retirements Help Rescind Some Police Lay Off Notices

(Stockton, CA)  - A City Council adopted early retirement incentive and other efforts to maintain police staffing have allowed the City of Stockton to rescind 21 layoff notices issued to police officers.

Fifty-five lay off notices were issued to police officers in May. The City has offered an early retirement incentive and 16 sworn police personnel have elected to participate. These retirements will take place prior to the end of the calendar year. Eight officers will still be laid off at the end of the month, and the lay off date for a remaining 23 officers has been amended to become effective July 18, 2009, in anticipation of further attrition. Some officers have elected to seek other employment opportunities.

“Anything we can do to save jobs – particularly police officers – is good news,” said Mayor Ann Johnston.
