2009 GET FIT! STOCKTON KICK-OFF EVENT

(Stockton, CA)  - On Saturday, June 13, 2009, the City of Stockton will kick-off Get Fit! Stockton. This year’s event will take place at Oak Park, 730 E. Fulton St., and include an aquathon – a run-swim-run event, a health walk, and a fitness fair, including demonstrations and information booths featuring fitness- and health-related activities and organizations. The fitness fair is from 9a - Noon and is free. Registration for the aquathon or health walk includes a t-shirt; the registration fee for the aquathon or walk is $7 per person or $30 for a family of five. Advance registration is preferred or register the morning of the event at 8:30 a.m.; event start time is 9:00 a.m.

The Get Fit! Stockton initiative is spearheaded by Councilmember Susan Eggman out of concern for community health issues particularly the high rate of obesity and diabetes.

"In these days where it seems so much if out of our control, we have the power to improve our health through fitness,” shares Councilmember Eggman. “Exercise is a key indicator for health. You don't need to be a marathon runner, but just think of the potential outcomes if we all just moved a little bit more. It is much more fun when you do something that you enjoy with friends or family, and every day that you exercise will make a difference in your overall health and the health of our community.”

The fitness festival will offer options and ideas for exercise and health maintenance, including running, rowing, kick-boxing, weight training, and much more. Over 20 vendors will have information booths, many will provide demonstrations, and anyone attending the fair will be eligible for a drawing, which will include prizes donated by the vendors.

“And don't forget,” Eggman adds, “mental health also improves with activity. Won't you join us in Get Fit! Stockton.”

Both vendors and participants are welcome to register. Registration forms are available on the City of Stockton web site; on the Get Fit! Stockton blog; or at any City of Stockton community center.
