Correction of Garbage Rate Increase
(Stockton, CA) - The City’s franchise agreements with Republic Services, Inc., formerly Allied Waste, and Waste Management allows for an annual adjustment to residential and commercial rates each year beginning on June 1, based on 50 percent of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose.
The City of Stockton’s Solid Waste & Recycling Division incorrectly calculated the annual (CPI) adjustment. The correct increase is 1.806 percent rather than 1.018 percent in the printed material provided recently to residential and commercial customers. The corrected rate of 1.806 percent will go into effect on June 1, 2009 for residential customers.
Republic’s commercial customers will be charged the 1.018 percent rate for the month of June. The correct 1.806 percent rate will not be reflected until the July bill. Waste Management’s commercial customers will see the correct rate of 1.806 percent effective with their June bills.
“This is a case of human error,” said Mike Miller, City of Stockton Solid Waste Manager. “We are working with the billing department, and the waste haulers to correct the error. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”
Residential customers of both Republic and Waste Management will be notified of the error and correction through a direct mailer to their homes. Commercial customers will be notified of the error as part of their June bill from their respective waste haulers.
