Candidate Index

The next City election will be in 2016 for Mayor and Councilmembers in Districts 2, 4, and 6.  The nomination period for candidates to run in the 2016 elections will open in early 2016.  Interested candidates should make an appointment with the City Clerk during the nomination period to receive the necessary forms to run for office.

2015 Appointment to Council District 2 Seat

When there is a vacancy on the City Council, the Council conducts interviews and makes an appointment to fill the remainder of the term.  With Councilmember Miller being elected to the County Board of Supervisors last June 2014, her Council seat will become vacant as of December 31, 2014.

The City Clerk's Office opened a 30-day nomination period that closed November 6.  At the close of the nomination period, the Clerk's Office received applications from five interested persons from District 2.  It is anticipated the City Council will conduct interviews of the five applicants and make the appointment at a City Council meeting in early January 2015.  The selected applicant will serve the remainder of Councilmember Miller’s term for District 2 which ends December 31, 2016.

City Elections

The City conducts elections every two years to fill seats on the City Council.  Candidates are nominated from their district at the June Primary Election.  The two candidates that receive the most votes in the June Primary Election advance to the citywide run-off election in the November General Election.

In the case of the Mayor's race, if no candidate receives 50% +1 of the vote in the June Primary Election, the top two candidates advance to the citywide run-off election in the November General Election.  If one of the Mayoral candidates receives at least 50% +1 one of the vote in the June Primary Election, there is no run-off election and that candidate will assume office January 1 following the General Election.
